hey there!!
i was actually considering to launch a site soon, however i only know the basics really, nothing fancy like logins and using it in conjunctions with databases and stuff...just the basics. i havent really got in mind what is going to be on the site just yet, but i do know that i need to improve my website creating skills. i have heard that software packages such as the macromedia package can be useful for site buildiung especially if its going to be pretty advanced. I've got this package but dont really know how to use it and where to start...
i was wondering if there where any guidance on the net about learning new skills and making a decent site??
*even the way techimo work is impressive, the way emails are sent to the user, login issues, CP control panels, adding new posts etc etc..the list goes on!!

Well, I just started a while ago...mabey a few weeks...I got a phpbb site up, and running now. Here is the link if you want to see it. http://exreaction.tollfreepage.com/ I still have a lot of work to do...like the name, and banner, but it is basically done.
First thing to let you know, setting up a site like this is very easy...fine tuning is the hard part. Basically to set it up, you upload the program, go to your main page, and follow an easy to understand instal page, and it installs automatically!
What do you want on the site? Do you want some kind of forum? Also...do you have a host already? Are you looking for free hosting, or paid? |

thanks for the link,
ermm, on the site, i want it to be password/user protected so only certain users can access the site. i'm also planing to stick up a chat room too, now this is kinda where the hard part comes, i have no idea how to do these things. i also want other features on the site such as downloading, uploading (possibily FTP Server by the looks of it) and also a little forum. this is what im pulling out of my head while im typing this, there is probaly more to some too once the site seems to be going well.
However, looking above and the features which im planning to put up onto the site, im sure ill have to purchase webspace, i dont think this will be a problem at all, i was planning on buying the webspace myself OR im not sure how, but using my own PC as a webserver for the site....
maybe if you could advise me too on how much i need as in space etc and companies which are good, decent priced etc--let me know, thanks.
first, before i even think of buying any type of webspace i need to know how to make the actual site and test it etc, all i know really is how to use hyperlinks and link pages and maybe a little more too, but not much... |

to make life easier, do you think there could be a software out there designed to make webpages like the one in my description?
Insted of doing everything manually, the software could sort everything out for you and all you need to do is fill out nessacary detiails...is this possible? |

If you want to host it yourself, first you need to make sure this is ok with your isp. Most isp's don't allow you to host your own website (you still can when they say no...but if u get caught you can lose your internet and have to pay fines!) |

If you do it this way, the only thing you learn is how to use that software, not how to actually build the sites. I recommend starting off doing everything by code from hand, and then moving on to the other stuff once you know what you're doing. |

i totally agree with you there, but im thinking of using the software as an alternative, becasue i really really really want to do this, and do it fast! looking at the link posted kindly by doddsy may take ages.. and ages it what i dont have. also just by reading it the stuff on that site, wont make sense to me unless i practice it over and over again..
so is there any software out there that can do this? im not going to use it straight away, ill read the notes and see what i can do---face it..the software cant do EVERYTHING...and even if it can errors will be made and they will have to be corrected manually and thats where i come in.... |
