am i lax or just ignorant?

ok my website has absolutely no security at all, my ftp is only secure from people uploading things, deleting files and folders

my website is just for a little clan who ranks like last in the Online Gamer League because we were just created. there is no badmouthing of anybody or any group or any site on my webpage or ftp. the website is using Apache

i have not put any thought into security but should i start thinking secure? i was thinkin that because i keep my mouth shut on my website and only stuff on there is praise i shouldn't be the target of any hack or anything. there is nothing of any value on my computer besides my time. do some hackers just ramdomly hack sites for no reason? as a general rule everything happens for a reason.

well i don't know. security is imporant, but you're not running an ecommerce server or something. maybe you should consider sftp (ftp that uses ssl) and blocking out ports other than 80 and 21... definately block out 23 and dont' let people in through telnet... that's the most dangerous one...

it's not that they might hate you. SOme hackers just hack random sites. They might put a virus on the site, that might be transported by the visitors (just MO)

i personally don't think you have a huge risk of getting hacked, but if you are concerned, take storm2k's advice

do you know of any good firewalls to block out port 23?

i heard that Windows is easier to get into than the public library.....

i have ZoneAlarm but i uninstalled it because it required to 60% of my CPU usage just to run it!

Choco,
I just upgraded to zonealarm pro 3.0,on XP and I cant see any way that it would use over 4% cpu,and thats just for a moment

lookin at task manager, the only time it shows any usage is just when I first start the program.

ROFL ! how true, well, sometimes...

Seriously, use ZA, it shouldn't suck up your CPU that much. BTW, How do you know if it is using 60% of your CPU?

push ctrl + alt + del then click on the processes tab
under CPU ZA would fluctuate between 55-70 or so. as soon i closed ZA (right click on icon and actually close the program) the CPU usage went down to 3% total

Interesting... I wonder if something went awry with your installation... I just checked and my status is at 00, unless I bring it up- then as said above, it rises then falls back to status quo- system is using 1-2 and UD is using 98-99... nothing else is being bogged. I would recomend ZA for your FTP, but if ya are having probs with it (zone alarm), then maybe try another FireWall or continue to go stag. GoodLuck!

Are you running a Router? If ya are, then you could get by on that if you arent a paranoic like me and not that concerned with security. If not, you could look into getting one. It ACTS as a physical firewall, but isnt truly one.
