| Apache, Development only?
I'm new to Apache and I'm unsure what it actually does
Is it just for use as a development server, to route code through to allow us to check if it works...
...or can it actually be used to host pages on the internet if I buy a domain?
I have a spare computer sitting up in my attic, if I added it to my home network and installed Apache, could I use it as a small home server to deploy sites to the internet? |

apache is by far the most widely used web server in the internet
SO yes it can be used to host webpages
--- edit ---
Just for an FYI
There is a line graph below on this URL showing where I got the statistical information http://news.netcraft.com/

it is a full fledged web server...it's actually the number 1 web server on the internet afaik. I'm running apache myself...you can find my site at http://k-techcomptuers.us may I also suggest godaddy.com for your domain name! (ps..if you're going to be hosting a web server..i'd suggest finishing the jump and using linux instead of windows.....much more secure and robust!! . |

| Wow thanks :)
Wow thanks for the help, I only posted this about a minute ago, now that's service, thanks!
I only want to use it so show off my work, not to host a business site or anything so I don't mind the problems of downtime etc.. How hard is it to get Apache to host on a selected domain, can anybody point me to any good tutorials on the subject, that would be great

I'm using Apache as well...I used GoDaddy.com for my domain name and DNS control. I couldn't be more pleased with their service.
I remember it was a little diffcult at first using linux and apache but it was well worth it.
I've been using it for about 3 months now. I'm still a newbie, but i can feel my way around now. Thanks to techimo and linuxforums.org www.teamredfox.com

I asked the same question here on techimo and never really got a good response, thats why I just went ahead and dived into Linux. Its not all too hard.
