how to replace the default web site NT4

Question. I am running NT4 on my intranet (with the option pack) and have been trying to replace the "default web site" with my own creation with no luck. I wil be the first to admit that I have zero experience with ISS, I have purchased the various microsoft resource books to help with no luck.

I either loose the default web site with no web site available or I see that the one I have created is listed as "running" but I cannot access it across the intranet. I am running the NT server as a PDC, with TCP/IP address assigned permently. IE no DCPH. As this is a small home network, this works ok. I do not use NT as a proxy server, more of a glorified file / print server.

Any thoughs? Anyone living in the Puyallup area want to make a little extra money and show me what I am doing wrong?

thanks in advance

I'm assuming you're running NT4 server.

What port have you configured your other "web site" for? Are you running any custom scripting, and do you have any custom COM applications running on your site?

digital, yes, NT4 server. I am using the standard tools that came with the NT server option pack to create and set up a web site. (in this case a intranet site) As far as the port, I beleive that it is set at the standard default which as I remember is 80.

Nothing custom at all, I am only running NT4 server, no email, but I am running HP directjet software.

Well if I remember right you can't rename the default website it has to be "default web site"

You can of course put your own files in there just fine however.

Just put your home page as "default.htm" and off ya go
theoretically...

if you can't have the default page be default htm make sure you set in your properties of the website that the default page will be xxxx.xxx

OK I just installed IIS5 WWW services to see if I could easily do do this... A few things you need to do.
1. OPen up IIS admin
2. Start the intranet website. (In IIS 5 the name can be changed from default)
3.Go to properties for that site.
4. Ensure home directory is right for your site.
5. In documents tab make sure that the default document has an entry for whatever your default page is. Normally index.html default.htm etc.
6. Go to anothe computer on you lan and try to access the intranet site by IP. for example if the IP of the glorified print/web/file server is 192.168.0.12 enter this into your browser "http://192.168.0.12" NO QUOTES
7. if that works fine then all you have to do is changed the hosts file on each pc to have an entry for the intranet site.
8. For example if you want to call the site intranet.com the entry would be 192.168.0.12 intranet.com

HTH these are the steps I did to bring the site up using IIS 5. Now off to remove IIS www services as I don't use it.
