Question
Hosting speeds

I was wondering what you guys thought about web hosting on lines with an upload of 256k or 384k? I am needing to host about 25 sites and none of them will get more than 100 hits a month. Would those uploads speeds work or should I stay with my rented server space on a T-1?
Thanks for the help!

i'd think it would work, but how much data do you expect to transfer in those 100 hits?

Not a lot. Most all of the sites are below 5 MB in space. There may be one guy that will need around 20 Megs. No one site would be over 50Megs at the extreme. I am hosting for mostly mom and pop places.

Another aspect to consider is uptime/availability of the sites.

Does your T1 provider have a service level agreement with you?
If you are going to do this over a DSL connection, it will probably be cheaper, but if and when the few people that hit the sites do visit, do they expect them to be available?
I was looking at it from a commerce view, such as placing orders, etc.
The DSL provider in my area is up and down quite a bit, and you might be wise to ask about any service level agreements if it's important that the sites be available whenever someone needs to access them.

Sometimes, cheaper isn't always better.

Very good question. But I will also ask is that dedicated bandwidth for the upload? What is the size of the average page request? Those 100 hits do they occur all in the same time frame or are they evenly spread out? How much is your "rented rack space"? and what is the actual dedicated bandwidth you get with that? Is this for "fun" or for business?

But just to let you know that for the most part YES a 256 or 384 k upload speed will handle 20 to 25 sites as long as their not huge pages being served or acting as file/mp3 sites.
