| domain name in address bar
Ok...I've had this question before...but it's never been resolved. I'm setting up the latest version of apache on fedora core 5. The domain for the server will be test.k-techcomputers.us. I'm using port 8080 because my isp blocks port 80. and my godaddy account will not let me set my domain to resolve to any port other than 80. To get around this i've forwarded my domain to [myip]:8080. Anyways...when I go to test.k-techcomputers.us it forwards correctly and my page loads but my ip address shows up in the address bar. Is there any way to get it to keep the domain name up there? It's a small issue but REALLY annoying me at the moment as it's been happening for about a year and I still haven't been able to fix it. Hopefully it's just something really stupid that i've been missing the entire time!

Why not just setup a hosting account with Godaddy or 1&1?
Then you don't need to have to worry about setting your server up or anything. |

I'm doing this more for the learning experience than anything! I want to learn about this stuff because some day I would like to work in the field! If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it thanks guys!! |

Ah, I see.
What exactly are you trying to learn? Does it need to be able to access the web, or could you just make it accessable to your local network?
You want to get into web development or server managment or what?
Sorry, I guess I can't really help you there though...mabey if you rename the server, and make the domain test.k-techcomputers.us instead of MSHOME or whatever it is? I don't know how that all works, but thats what I would try. |

At GoDaddy within the "forward domain" area you can check "mask domain". This should forward you to the desired domain but still keep your orginal domain name in the address bar. |

well what you could do is park the name at a parksite like dnspark.com then redirect the name to your ip:8080 and that should keep the name up there and not the ip.
