Difference between hits and visits

Can somebody explain to me the difference between hits and visits when looking at website statistics? I thought a hit was the same as a visit but my total hits are 2333 where as visits are only 80.

Also are pages the sum of the total amount of pages loaded for each visitor? So if 10 people look at 3 pages on the website I would have 30 pages. Is that correct.

A visit is when one browser accesses your websight, you get a hit for every page or pic ect.that browser requests on that visit or a certain amount of time.
