    Need a C++ compiler

    I'm starting to dabble around in C++ just for fun, and I'm wondering if there's a place I could d/l a free compiler. It could be for either Windows or Linux.

    type gcc at your shell prompt

    gcc is a c compiler. Type g++ at the shell prompt for a c++ compiler.

    GCC can be used as a front-end to g++. All you have to do is manually link to the standard C++ library (-lstdc++).

    If you want a free compiler for Windows, use either Borland, MinGW, or DigitalMars.

    I agree; use Borland's free compiler for Windows or else Dev-C++ (it comes with the Mingw port of GCC).

    I was talking to a classmate and heard that gcc has a bug? I only play with g++ in Linux...

    As for Windows, I just used VC++ Learning Edition... don't know how free it is, but the only drawback I saw it having was a note they put on every compiled app. that said it was made with a evaluation copy... but, it was functional...

    You can register to get a free trail of Borland's C++ Builder. It is a very very powerful devlopment environment and user freindly once you get the hang of it.
