    Computer Unique Identifier.

    Hi guys,

i am thinking of creating a website for a friend that requires only users to visit and login from the one location or more specifically 1 computer... so i need a computers unique identifier, something that tells me that it can only be that one specific computer (this is selected after the first login)... my thoughts were

    a) Mac Address (though if on dial-up it defeats the purpose)
    b) a System file where i can read the Date/Time modified but is unique and that isn't changed during normal operation, as in freecell.exe (on closer inspection, 2 of my computers have the same freecell date ).
    c)??????

    any ideas guys?

    cheers

    Ex

Do you have a firewall? If so you could add a specific rule that will allow only certain IP address to connect with your web servers port 80.

no because most people would have a dynamic IP, therefore defeating the purpose, also it will be 99.9999% likely this will be on a third party server with no access to the router or firewall.
    thanks though.

might try something like this GUID might not be what you are looking for but its a starting point. I know UUID's and GUID's are used via the net for data streams but thats not my area of expertise

so the theory being, i write a program for there computer that generates a GUID - then for the first time they login, it uploads that GUID and then when next they login it checks a newly generated GUID compared to the one that they had previously uploaded?... i like it so far! though they use MAC address and other things.... the only problem being what if they use Dial-up?.... i guess in that case go off there domain name or something.. size of a randomly generated file i put on there computer??? as in 1253 or 1987 bytes...

as exally said that they are using a third party.. I think the options are very limited.
