a very good LEGAL reference for PHP would be to visit www.w3schools.com and use their "Learn PHP" link on the left hand side, it goes over many of the basic as well as more advanced functions... and remember theres always www.php.net

Learning a new language is not something you can do "quick". Even if you know C++ pretty well (which PHP is based on) it still is a very different coding style when it comes to variables, and especially arrays (in PHP you will learn to love arrays, they are extremely flexible and powerful)
