I'm putting together a small website for my WoW guild. All I really need is e-mail and the ability to put up a vbulletin forum. being able to run a vent or teamspeak channel would be a plus.
There's tons of hosts out there all offering extremely similar services. If anyone's had experience either positive or negative, I'd love to hear it.
I notice when I was looking at registering a domain that GoDaddy has basic host service for only 3.95 a month.

Don't go with netfirms. My site was down 25% of the time, and their customer support is terrible. You also have to go through a few annoying ("Please Hold" was said a lot) telephone calls to cancel an account with them. |

I've been very happy with Godaddy's hosting. jkrohn pointed me to them whenI was bitching about Hostony. So far they've been rock solid dependable and very easy to use. I have several websites hosted there. Their customer service doesn't have a 1-800 number, but when you call them, you get an American tech who really knows his/her stuff. I have never called and *not* received an immediate solution. Best CSRs in the business.

GoDaddy was the worst web host I've ever used.
If you're trying to go really cheap, you can look into 1&1 for hosting, but they are not very reliable (everything works perfectly unless you want near 100% uptime, and need a little support)
I've been using WebFaction for quite a while now and am very happy with them. Never noticed any downtime at all. They also have some stuff you can only get with VPS/Dedicated servers, like being able to setup SVN and other applications, not sure about teamspeak or vent though (you can ask them about it though). Not that you'll probably need that extra, but it is very nice if you do. http://www.webfaction.com/services/hosting
But why are you using vBulletin for a small WoW board?

I switched from Hostony to Godaddy and was pleasantly surprised at the service and reliability, so maybe Hostony is really the pits. Godaddy has a few gotchas, like limited FTP accounts and no IMAP email service, but otherwise they're been totally reliable and easy to work with. What's your beef with them? |

The problem was that the site always loaded slower than hell, and was down a few times per day. Not to mention the severe limitations they put on your account. |

| my bad phpbb actually. I don't know why I wrote vbulletin.
I don't need 100% up time, so if it dies every now and again its no big deal. also it looks like the cheapest deal from WebFaction is almost $10 a month. Call me super cheap, but godaddy is starting to sound real good. |

Yes, Webfaction is more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
I'd go with 1&1, and, if possible, get your domain name through somebody else (like godaddy). That way, if you ever do have problems with your host they don't have any access to your domain and can't lock it out from you. |

It's like they want to make sure you don't use a cheap personal account to host too many business sites. Quote:

Still, they can make it a PITA to get your domain moved. And stay far away from Network Solutions. They're expensive and they really make it a pain to move. |

if you haven't picked a host yet, I recently found a free host that fits right into what you describe: Zymic the only downside you'll be mySite.nvdv.com... |
