There's not really much difference between the two. If you're looking into using Microsoft proprietary technologies to build the page (.NET, MSSQL, ASP, etc), you'll need a Microsoft Server. Otherwise, just go with whatever one that's cheaper. |

I like linux better personally. I've had better luck with them (though that may be purely coincidental so don't take that as gold). If you need ms specific stuff like him61 said go for windows but otherwise I'd suggest linux (usually cheeper as well!) |

Thanks Hsm61 and SR71000 for your replies.
Now I have to wait to get the domain name back. I told 1and1 that I wanted to renew my domain name for another year. I told the 1and1 person that I was also interested in putting the domain name that I had registered with them into one of their hosting packages. For some reason he was not able to do this. So I said I would just register the domain name with them for another year in order not to lose it, and that I would worry about the hostiig later. They said I needed to update my acount which I did before the expiration date of my domain registration.
Lo and behold when I later went to check on the day of the expiration to make sure that the domain was registered for another year I coulnd't get in to my account. I contacted 1and1 and they said my account was closed and that the domain name was in redemption and that I would have to pay $40 to get it out. That really made me mad. I called several times and was finally referred to the customer complaint department which has no number that you can call. They can only be reached by mail. So now I am waiting for a reply. |

Sounds like time to get your domain name transferred to another registrar ASAP. |

I have no experience in building a website. I want to building a catering website for my nephew. We want it to include his menu options, pictures of past parties, some history of his business, contact information, and perhaps some testimonials. I want it to be attractive in a refined classic stlye and not cluttered or gaudy. |

DocMartin, I think the Microsoft vs Linux debate is further down the road when your website needs online ordering and other features. I think right now you dont have to worry about that. I would say just sign up at yahoo web hsoting - Yahoo! Web Hosting: Everything you Need for a Professional Site - for about $10 a month and get a site up and running in an hour (since you are new). They have everything setup already so you can focus on picking pages and placing your text and pictures the way you want. Let me know if you need more information or would like to understand the ins and outs further. Best wishes! Would love to see what you come up. Send me the link when you are done. |
