hello,
i need assistance w/an xcopy command that will basically copy a directory from one drive to another w/out the contents from the subdirectories. is this possible?
something like:
xcopy u:\mainfolder\*. p:\
(including the subdirectories from "mainfolder", but w/out the contents)?
any help would be much appreciated.
thank you. |

Welcome to TechIMO.
Instead of Xcopy which is for directories (including subs)...try the copy command. Or go into Explorer, and copy/paste from one directory into another. What OS are you running???

| thank you for the reply. i'm running XP PRO SP3. to add to the explanation, i have an existing drive (u: ) which includes hundreds of user folders including security. i would like to copy each user's folder (including security) to a new drive (p: ) that was recently created instead of manually doing one folder at a time....which could take a while. hope this helps. ...and to add again... copy the user folders, w/out contents inside. (if that is even possible) thanks anyway

I don't know of a command that will copy just the folder name without any contents within the folder, and don't think that is possible. What you can do is copy the folders onto the "P:" drive, and then manually delete the contents afterwards. I've used other Windows programs for directory usage, and none of them do what you're asking. Maybe someone else on here has an idea. Sorry that I can't help you any further. |

For a small fee, LOL, I'll write you a program that will copy folder names sans content. It'll be in my spare time of course (i.e. don't know how long it will be). The concept is quite simple really; implementation is the tickler
It's a trapezodial, reverse polling transverse algorithm with simple file parsing
