| convert ms access to mySQL?
Is it possible and not too difficult to convert a ms access database to mySQL?
Another forum I read wants to convert from Snitz forums, which runs asp on access to vBulletin. |

I think if you have MySQL server installed, it will do it. I don't rightly know, but we are going to convert an application database I'm writing in Access to MySQL, and the guy that's doing it said it's pretty easy. Sorry I don't have any better info for you, but I know it's possible.

All you need is the SQL the creates the Access tables and the data.
What version Access? For O2k, methinks it was Tools, Analyze, Documenter... Then you need to choose properties... This creates an 'almost' useless report. Save as text. Oh, for all tables.
Now, you need to tweak the txt report. (iffin anyone knows better way, I'm all ears...). If you know mySQL, make appropriate CREATE TABLEs. Regardless, this t'aint much fun, but better than doing manually.
For the data, export to txt file. Import data into each mySQL table.
btw, much easier to go mySQL to Access, but why would anyone do that?
Or use something like this: http://www.convert-in.com/acc2sql.htm
$40??? Sheesh, give me the AccessDB, I'll give you a mySQL DB for $35....OK,OK, $30...Ok, case o' Corona(I'm 18+), 2 limes, your on. Offer subject to limit on tbls, data.... |

Thanks for the replies. I did find the Access to mySQL converter earlier today. It looks like it's worthwhile, but has some limitations.
Are you serious and have you done it before qball? If it will work with vBulletin, I can convey your offer to the forum admin (I am a moderator, but all I know about databases is that you store data in them). ;-) |

In mysql theres an option in "Im-/Export" to do an ODBC import which can import an access db. I tried it out on a sample db, unfortunatly it didn't go to well... but I think it was because some of the tables had spaces in the names (it was a MS sample db... good one MS... doh!)
might be worth looking into....
I think it might work ok as long as no tables or fields have spaces in their names.
cheers and good luck!
Edit: Tried it again with the spaces removed and it went much better. There were still errors tho! So if you go this route, I suggest doing multiple tests with a small copy of your access db first, making sure that all tables and fields will be created properly with the correct data types etc., before moving on to the complete db...
g'luck again!

| yes, have done before, many times after...
If your access DB has 4356 tables containing 9877387 rows in each, [qball] no want [/qballl].
Not if, I claim, can do. |

me makey joke, but have actually seen a world-wide multi-mill$$ company that used access as enterprise solution.
it was horrible, had 500-600 tbls, with over 100 tbls containing more than 1000000 rows. I couldn't believe it even worked.
They wondered why they CONSTANTLY had to deal with data corruption and why, it was SO SLOW.... |
