How can you tell 'when' a webpage is altered?

Is there a way (possibly by looking at page source) to tell when a webpage has been altered? Hard to explain but I got some info from a website that the author of the website says he changed at a certain time but I disagree and wanted proof. I know you can go into page source and see all the coding but I was wondering if there was any way to see at what time any changes were made. I figure it's a long shot.

    thanks

I don't know of a way to do it through the source code, but there is a chance that an older copy of the site may be available through the Way Back Machine:
Welcome to The Internet Archive Wayback Machine

Popular websites will sometimes have a saved copy from every month going back for years. It will all depend on the site in question.
    I don't like signatures.

There is no way to know what code was changed, only the date the file was last modified.

Unless you have a saved page of each and compare them there won't be a way to tell any difference in the code.

A just for instance: Lets say a difference was made using php code, in the browser it only renders the final html results and not the actual code itself. So it could actually be a similar php code that in the end appears to be same but did additional tasks that were hidden or took another route to get the exact same results.

It really depends on the website in question. if you could post the name of this website then that might help

in the google search engine, check the cached (indexed) date. that's more for when google reindexing the page though.. not when the web site changes. nevermind. i think you can also find different add-on tools through seomoz.org to track information date on the site. for instance, what date it was created and when it was last edited.
