Please help with domain name / web hosting transfer
Can someone please explain the domain purchasing process and web hosting thing. I have an idea for an e-business ect. The question is when I purchase a name can I transfer it to my site host, how? I know many domain name sellers host but I need a fast host with a shopping cart, any recommendations?
I would really really appreciate anyone who could give me at step by step what to do list from purchasing the domain to starting up with web hosting!!!
The design I can do. Thing is, I have worked for other people designing but never my own site so I don?t want to mess up. Thanks a lot for the help |

Welcome to Techimo !
Well, I can tell you how I do this.
1. I register my domain name at Register.com
I know that they aren't the cheapest at $35 year...but I have never had any problems and can get into my accounts and change things...and talk to a real person. They have always been helpful to me.
2. I sign up my new domain name with my hosting company. I use addr.com as my hosting company. They set up my account on their servers immediately. Gold account about $160 year.
3. I sign back into Register.com and put in the DNS numbers for addr.com (DNS=Domain Name Server)(ns.addr.com) and a secondary name server (ns2.addr.com).... and the IP addresses that go along with the name servers. http://addr.com/show.cgi?faq-dns_info.htm
4. Wait, wait, wait, and wait (about 24-72 hours) for dns infor to go through all addr.com
s name servers and the internet. ..... Then should be able to type in your newwebsite address and have it show up.
That is basically all there is to it. Much easier than most people think. So for under $200 yr....you can get your website up and running if your doing it all yourself. (Yes, before anyone posts....you CAN find better prices than the ones I posted...again, these are just the ones that I use.) I tend to stay with the businesses that I can rely on and never have any problems with, EVEN if it costs me a little more. When I first started out Addr.com's customer service people were very very helpful and friendly, and answered all my newbie questions with patience and I have never forgotten that.
Well I hope that helps a little. |

Thanks Crouse, that was a big help
I have 2 questions though
1- when i buy a domain, where do i store or hold the name until i find a host? Is there a separate charge? can i buy a domain now and wait to a later date to get hosting?
2 - does addr allow for credit card use? I guess i can look myself but if you use this service i would like to ask you how easy it is to set up.
Also , i have used goemerchant for host and credit card service. They are easy to use but cost about 60.00 a month.
any more thoughts?
Thanks for the help |

1. If you register with Register.com .... your domain name is Parked on there servers..... (i think you even get a 3-4 page site if you want it) .... So yes you can leave your domain name parked at register.com indefinitely.... JUST DON'T LOOSE YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD for register.com ........ it is a pain in the neck when you do
2. Yes, addr.com lets you use credit cards.... and your account is accessible immediately by typing in www.yourwebsitename.addr.com along with ftp.yourwebsitename.addr.com this allows you to work on your actual webspace right away.
I have never tried godaddy.com or aletiahosting.com but on any web host....... read their terms of service carefully. Sometimes on the cheaper ones....... they actually own your domain name.... so check it out closely !
goemerchant........ don't know..... sorry. Maybe someone else has some experience with them.

Hi yomama,
I've been using this guy.
You can get a domain name and webhosting cheap.
I just post picture and stuff for the family with them.
They seem to be very relyable. http://www.soniqhost.com/default.htm |

Thanks so far with all the help and the references!
Im not that worried about price as much as reliability when it comes to the shopping cart. Any more reccomendations for shopping cart/credit card transactions?
Thanks in advance |

Daft, what are storefronts?
I just need the "buy" buttons, the site i can do, the buttons/credit service, i need for realtime credit card purchasing.
prohosting is a bit costly for that, about 70.00 for the mid level package that i would need.
thanks |

well u would need an acct with them to use it.. a store front is Quote:
"
StoreFront
Sell up to 10 Products
SSL Security
Full Shopping cart capabilities
Real Time Credit Card
processing gateway compatability
"
| they list it lower on their Pricing page.. it cost 100 to set up and 17.05 a month.. there there is Full store Quote:
Full Store
Sell Unlimited Products
SSL Security
Full shopping cart capabilities
Real Time Credit Card
processing gateway compatability
Discussion Groups
CSV Download
QuickBooks Download
CSV Catalog Import. | just pointing out they have the things u r looking for.. as for price.. I'm sure there are better pricing out there.. and just as good.. but as it goes with things that are cheaper.. u take a risk at shotty service.. look into the sites already mentioned by the others as well u might find someone who can offer everything at a low price.. and be fast.. and up without crashes.. =) hey u never know.. =) |
