| Do you adhere to W3C standards?
Couple questions I would like answered as well:
1) Do you test browsers other than IE? which?
2) Do you use IE only functions? (Most DHTML, some aspects of CSS, etc, etc, etc)
3) Do you care if things don't work "quite right" in other browsers?
4) Do you think that the non-adherence to w3c standards is a bad thing?
5) Does IE's blatant non-adherence to w3c bother you? (in this I refer to it's rendering things it shouldn't, like forgetting to close somethign like a table tag. Won't display at all in Netscape, but IE fires it right up. Not refering to IE only functions that people choose to implement)
After you answer these questions check out this article: http://news.com.com/2100-1023-941926.html
Some highlights of it:
*WYSIWYG editors (including the adobe series and frontpage) produce code that does not adhere to w3c.
*Writing code that displays only in IE will eventually leave IE (and thus MS) as your only gateway to teh web.

First of all, what exactly is so bad about IE? Why don't the other browsers just pick up some of the stuff that IE can do and they can't, instead of yelling PHADGER and getting their undies in a bundle? It can be worked out without namecalling, complaining or acting like babies.
Truth is IE is da bomb. It's fast, slick and generally stable (in my experience).
It works... and it's what a lot of people use. You don't see anyone going out and changing PC architecture just because it's "bad"... they format to current majority standards... because it makes sense...
Bad examples but hey it works.

Oh yes, I also would like to say that no, I don't like the fact that Microsoft dictates the market so heavily, but fact is they're stuck up jerks who will do nothing short of being total and complete %^&*( to make a profit. Microsoft needs some serious moral work... if they think "protecting" our data by monitoring us, and forcing people to use their stuff is morality, then they have some serious problems.

Whoops forgot...
1) Yes, Konqueror
2) Occasionally
3) Yes I care
4) Somewhat
5) I think the fact that if you forget to close a tag, that that shouldn't stop the whole page from displaying... it's called adaptation and IE does it well... it's called shoddy when the browser farts because of one little error.

1. Yes........ Opera, Netscape, Mozilla (Windows) Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, Konqueror (Linux)
2. Never......... unless I create seperate pages for non-IE browsers.......
3. Yes........ I try to fix the problem when possible......
4. VERY VERY bad....... sloppy coding caused by WYSWYG editors only further entrenches this problem.
5. Yes........ that's the #1 reason I use Opera almost 100% of the time.......(in windows and linux). If it displays good in opera..... it will probably display good in most browsers.
As a side note..... WYSWYG editing is great while your learning.........but it is definately no substitute for learning html and the PROPER coding. I used to think........ oh well ..... it doesn't matter as long as IE can view it okay...... then I finally woke up and realized how unproffesional that was............ and that it wasn't doing my clients any favors by blocking out many browsers just because I wasn't doing my job right. The only way to get a w3c compliant page.........is usually to code by hand or fix the html the WYSWYG editors shove out.
Everyone is allowed to be a newbie......... I just hope more up and coming web designers realize dreamweaver and frontpage aren't perfect and knowing how to tweak your pages to work with more than just IE is a benefit to their customers and the sites they create.
I still need to work on making my sites more accessible...... example... color blind......... blind...... and text browser readable....
Always something to learn |

I'm with you Cody,
Wifey uses Netscape and she can't get there as fast as I can .... and I'm talking anywhere.
Most Windows users who think they don't like IE, think so because they think they don't like Bill Gates, or because they know someone who doesn't like Bill, or they heard that you're not supposed to like him, or they beleive the lawyers nonsence about a monopoly, or BG is too rich already, or something ......
We all have our own opinions, that's mine. No flames please !!!!

Alright, I'm putting a stop to this right now.
This is not a "bash IE thread" or a "defend IE thread"
Simply answer the questions or this thing will venture very far off topic.
If you have an opinion feel free to make a new thread.

No flaming here I only have one beef really with IE ........ it is so integrated into the Windows OS that if it crashes...... my whole system crashes.......... THAT drives me crazy...... I can crash Netscape.....or Opera...... and reload that app and keep going.....(most of the time)...... IE crashes...... --reboot time.
Wife used to use IE only -----and windows........ she kept having problems with it crashing in some sites...... and shutting down the computer......... I switched her to opera........ and she now likes it better......
Tabbed windows...... google search bar......... very easy to customize........ just my opinion.
Cody......... the number one reason I don't like IE's very lax way of rendering......is that it makes the web designers lazy........and doesn't promote a uniform structure. w3c sets out to help get a uniform structure in place ............ MS just thumbs it's nose at them.........and can get away with it for now because they have the biggest market share......................... but I keep installing linux and giving away free linux cd's to my disgruntled friends.......

1) Do you test browsers other than IE? which?
A. Opera and mozilla
2) Do you use IE only functions? (Most DHTML, some aspects of CSS, etc, etc, etc)
A. At times
3) Do you care if things don't work "quite right" in other browsers?
A. As long as the majority of functionality is there I can live with small "anomolies" (spelling)
4) Do you think that the non-adherence to w3c standards is a bad thing?
A. Not really....Who has the right to truely say I have to conform to "their choice of standards"? (double edge sword ya know )
5) Does IE's blatant non-adherence to w3c bother you? (in this I refer to it's rendering things it shouldn't, like forgetting to close somethign like a table tag. Won't display at all in Netscape, but IE fires it right up. Not refering to IE only functions that people choose to implement)
A. Truthfully No...Their choice |
