Choosing domain name - Jewellery or Jewelry
Hi guys,
Don't know if this is the right place to ask or not.
I'm going to be making some jewellery soon. I'm Canadian and we spell it either way, but most often we use Jewellery over Jewelry. In selecting a domain name I'm not sure which to use. I would think jewelry since it has more search engine results than jewellery.
I will be selling mostly to the US via Ebay or Etsy so hence my hesitation for using the Canadian/British version.
What are you your thoughts? Should I choose Jewellery as a domain name but also forward Jewelry to my main site? Is it necessary? I don't really feel like changing the Canadian spelling just to attract American buyers but will if it means I will get noticed in the search engines more.
Would my domain name come up in Google search results regardless of which way a person spells it? I guess I would have to have that key phrase with either spelling right?
When I have my site I guess it would be good to include both spellings in the content?
I know a bit about optimization but not when it comes to similar words. It doesn't appear when you Google the word the other comes up as a spelling correction so it seems Google looks at it as 2 different words though they mean the same.
Please advise,
Thanks!Last edited by musicfreak; October 22nd, 2012 at 01:08 PM.

Google usually sorts misspelled words but in this case since its an actual common spelling I'm not sure.
If the domains are available you might want to buy both just so you could set-up fwd'ing and then not only would you be covered for misspelled urls you wouldn't have to worry about someone else setting up something similar. (depends on how unique your actual domain is going to be)
If most of your selling is going to be focus on US parties you'd want to focus on that demographics. So you'd want the common US spelling. However, if your focus is going to be selling via third parties like eBay, then the actual main site focus is a bit less crucial since most of your traffic would likely come from them rather than through Google.

Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you for answering. I think I'll buy both URL's and may have the American spelling as my main site. I'm appealing to North American market but majority will be US buyers obviously.
Thanks.

FWIW, I've never seen it spelled jewellery.
Jewelry vs. jewellery - GrammaristFor the noun meaning articles, especially of gold, silver, or precious stones, used for personal adornment, jewelry is the preferred spelling in American English. Jewellery is preferred in varieties of English from outside North America. Both spellings appear in Canadian English, but jewelry prevails by a two-to-one margin.

Hi,
We spell it both ways but Jewellery is more common.
There are lots of spelling differences between American and Canadian/British English as I'm sure you know. No wonder some people get confused! Most of Canadian spelling is British but we also mix in a bit of American!
Here are more examples between the 3:

Hi guys,
With what I asked before does it matter if I choose a dot.com or .ca site? I'm Canadian so feel I should choose .ca but realize .com is more prominent. I guess someone looking for me could put in .com and get another site if I chose .ca. Does .com or .ca affect the search engines? I didn't think so but wanted to ask you first.
Thanks

if you can afford it, can you get both .com and .ca, and then just have .ca redirected to the .com, so anyone using either one goes to the same site?

@ Steve That's what I'm thinking of doing.
@ Shyguy I could also do that too. Yikes, that means I will have 3 redirects with the .ca and the 2 different spellings.
I may just go with jewelry.com for now with a jewellery.com redirect. .com is the more prominent one and there are more searches for jewelry than jewellery. Plus I will be dealing with Americans more than Canadians when using Ebay and Etsy. I may grab them later in the month or next month depending on the cost.
Thanks!

Good question. How about this one? Jewellery.com And this one? jewellery.ca They look like search sites. Maybe they're available to purchase?

Hi guys,
Those aren't my sites, I was just using them as an example. My URL will have two more words in front of jewelry. Sorry for the confusion!
Interesting about the other sites but I think they're both owned and they are making money off of sponsored links. But hey, I'm just a newbie! What do I know!
Take care!Last edited by musicfreak; October 25th, 2012 at 12:31 AM.
