| New site setup advise needed - and opinions RE directnic.com (attn TBC)
I'm researching setting up a site for my work, from scratch. Been reading various topics here for ideas how to start, & where to shop. Checked out several domain registrars & web hosts so far.
In one topic, TheBurningCat recently recommended www.directnic.com and they look like the best I've seen so far. Almost sounds TOO good!
$15 domain registration including: Quote:
When you register or transfer your domain to directNIC, we give you 20 MB of free hosting space per domain. We also allow unlimited, free virtual domains with 20 MB of space each.
So, for example, if you have registered mydomain.com, you could create unlimited virtual domain variations, such as services.mydomain.com or family.mydomain.com.
The free hosting option is supported by advertising that directNIC places on your site. There are three advertising banner types that you could choose from: pop-up banner, framed banner, or top and bottom banners.
If you don't want the banners, you can move to a bannerless solution for only US$15 per year, or 2 gigabytes of data transfer, whichever comes first. Bannerless hosting has other advantages, such as unlimited file types and larger files sizes.
| And: Quote: |
Any domains that are using directNIC's nameservers (hosted, parked, redirected, "for sale," or using directDNS) are eligible for the POP3 email service. Users need to purchase primary email accounts separately for each domain name. The cost of the primary POP3 account is US$10 per year, plus only US$5 for each additional POP3 account for the same domain.
| $15 per year web hosting for 20mb???? And email for $10 annual??
Plus, they've got "site creator" software to build a page with. Kind of attractive since I don't know html, don't own web creation software, and the only web pages I've done previously were with Yahoo's Page Builder.
SO - what's the catch, or what am I missing? $40 total annual (domain reg., hosting, & 1 email) just sounds TOO cheap!
TBC - how long have you been with them, and how 's it worked out for you?
Anybody - Experiences? Recommendations? Other suggestions? |

One of my friends and I set up a site for a non-profit organization. We found a place like www.directnic.com except they host web sites for non-profit organizations. We were very surprised at how low the cost was for all they offered. I haven't heard from them for a long time, but they haven't complained of any problems or encountered any catches as far as I know. |

Just read all the fine print.........carefully........
Sometimes you are agreeing to let them control your domain name........ (not a good thing)..........
As far as price...... sounds great..... but:::::::
2 gigs of data transfer isn't all that much..... and sounds like thats for the year......... ??????
Not nearly as cheap............but.........
Addr.com offers a "Silver Plan"
100 mb storage
4 gigs data transfer (per month)
3 email boxes
$9.95 month....... less 10% if you pay by year........
I use them because they are reliable...... I can talk to a real person..... tech support is great......

Hi,
2 Gigs of data transfer for 20mb is adequate enough,
but it depnends on what kind of site you are running,
take you time and choose your host, a bad host with poor support would cause you nightmares, You can always test thier response time by e-mailing them
What kind of site creator do they offer ? ...

I'm really sorry i missed this thread. My computer for some reason or another has been going Kamikazi on me.
Anyhooo, Directnic is a good domain name register and their tech support was fast and personal plus they were s00per cheap and s000per easy to use. I never tried their hosting but for my hosting i pay $170US a year for 100 meg and 5 emails.

If you are really into it, I recommend running your OWN website, just need an IP address, and you are in full control....
All you need is a dinky old PC ..to be the server....
And its much easier to do than you would think =)

yeah, but you'd have to register the domain name if you did your own hosting. Who on earth would anyone want to keep typing in xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx all the time just to access a website?
