| Hosting a website w/ no domain name and w/ a dynamic (cable) IP? CAn it be done?
Just for learning, I am considering setting up IIS on my machine. I don't think I will keep the site, because I can't think of what I'd put on it anyway, but I'd just like to play around with it for a while.
How would you access my site if I didn't have a domain name? YOu'd have to know my IP right? Well, what if my IP is not static (its not). I have roadrunner and I think my lease renews every couple days. At any rate, is there any way I could allow friends and family to visit my site given my current restrictions?
BAsically, I don't want them to have to e-mail me, say "hey- what's your currrent IP?", just to be able to see my site.
I may be asking the impossible, but I figured I"d just run it by you guys and see whats up. Thanks for any input. |

You can achieve that by using a DDNS service like http://www.dyndns.org . This part of the service is free and allows you to have a host name that is associated with one of thier domain names (like homeip.net which I use)
After you pick the host name, this will give you an address like http://dvnt1.homip.net for your website.
You can run a client that automatically updats your IP information or you can just update it manually. |

I personally use www.no-ip.com.
It allows wildcatds before your choice of names, mx options, etc.
the site has the no-ip DUC (Dynamic Update Client) which automatically udpates the dns record when you sign on.
I use it for hosting a web site, an IRC server, and a mail server.
Easy to set up, and maintain, and unlike some providers, they don't cancel your dns name if you don't update in 30 days ( I had to be offline for couple of months and when I got back, the name was still active.) |
