| What server to use?
hey everyone
I'm running a web server from my Win 98se machine here at home.... my question is this?
What server should I use?
I currently have a freeware server, abyss
Should I use PWS? Apache? stay with abyss?
I'm not overly impressed with abyss, but it was simple to set up.
Any and ALL input will be appreciated |

On a Win98 machine I would recommend Apache but for ease of use check out "foxserv" which uses Apache with MySQL and PHP support built right in.
But ultimately you need to get a "server os" such as *nix or Win2K

That'd be an operating system brandon.
As far as a web server program, Apache is nice. Give that a shot. |

yeah, apache is the de facto standard for web-serving. i think i read a report that something like 60% of all web-servers run apache. i'd also recommend getting a better os. my vote goes (of course) to Linux, but win2k is a good one too. |

- Brandon | Well the reason I said that is because he's looking for a web server, not an OS. But, running Apache on a *nix web server would be the best thing to do IMO. I don't mean to cause any trouble.. |

Just to clarify..
Mntsnow suggested moving up to Unix or Win2K, as those are more popular operating systems for those who choose to run a server. Thus, I simply stated my opinion that for server purposes - I personally prefer RedHat Linux.

| good for you.
Now, and I'll catch heck for this, but running a web server on any OS less than 'SERVER', is problematic...
give the url/ip !!!DON"T!!! and your Win98se box will be an unresponding, need to reboot candidate. Talk about security concerns?!?
Should think about OS upgrade, first. Then a current apache release should be sufficient. Linux, very strong option. Cheaper, better, outside MS (even XP imho).
If thinking 2k, get XP... |

OK, to help clarify... I have cable... with no-ip for a domain name (for now) I do have a amchine with Red Hat 7.1 I just don't currently have a router to run with it... and I would prefer hardware NAT/firewall over software. I run firewall protection on the 98se machine. I had a software router/DNS for windows, but for some reason, it won't foreward to the Linux box correctly. I have tried it on the IRC server I had on it. I want to get some of the processes of this Winblows machine, desparately... just not able to, yet.
Just looking for the temp solution currently. |
