Well persoanlly I learned from Webmonkeys
I think their tutorials are great. If you want soem free software, check out EVRSOFT 1st page.
It's an HTML editor that I really like. From beginner to advanced, it has a ton of configurations that have what you need.

Welcome to techimo !
Learning html and coding by hand is relatively easy........and there are absolutely tons of websites for this........ google will turn up thousands.
Just go to google and type Learn Html and you will see what I mean.
As for some of my favorite sites...... http://www.pagetutor.com/ http://www.w3schools.com/
Most useful Windows Editor you will ever own...... free ......here: www.notetab.com NoteTabLight
and the list could go on and on......
If you are really under budget constraints...... truly consider switching to Linux Mandrake 9.0 ...... for under $8 you can buy an operating system that includes everything you need to start webdesigning (free if you want to download it) . Granted that sounds like a lot to bite off........ but you get:
Gftp : a great ftp program for uploading websites.
Gimp : the closest you can get to PhotoShop without paying for it.
BlueFish : Very similar to NotePadPro--a great text editor/html editor.
And over a thousand other programs........ many that are very helpful for a web designer.
Anyway......thats some things to look into......... hope that helps a little. |

I looked at webmonkey alot when I started, Its a great site.
I learned most of what I know about HTML from This(Download Page). Its a windows help file with alot of the html stuff and it shows what most of it does and everything.
As JKrohn said check out EverSoft's 1st Page if you want something with more of a Frontpage/ Dreamweaver feel.
I like using Notepad, But have upgraded to something like Metapad or Tera Text Editor(Syntax Hightlighting and some other nice things) |

Get Netscape and use the included Composer feature. FREE. If you have no knowledge of html this is an easy way to start. Start with a template and modify it and go from there. Yes this is very simplistic for an expert but a beginner won't feel overwhelmed by having to write code that you don't understand. |

i thought a good way to learn was to create simple things with dream weaver and see what it creates. you can slowly become quaint with HTML and see where dreamweaver actually makes flaws....
just start with a blank page and set the link colors... then move onto a page of just 1 line and it is centered with a certain color, don't remember the color per say but remember the style of how it says the number and what <div> means if you put stuff in tables.
just move one thing at a time |
