making a graphicky site resolution friendly

I use my personal webpage primarily to show photographs, graphics and writing.

I want the pages to have a very graphical flair, but I'm having a heck of a time getting them to look good at all resolutions.

I guess with people setting their own font sizes and resolutions it's impossible to optimize a website to look good on all of them, but are there some tricks to doing a graphics rich page that's various-resolution/font size friendly?

A good example is the current front page. It looks great at 1024x768, but not so hot at lower resolutions.

Thanks for any advice,

SCMT

if 1024 x768 is the standard, that's what I'll aim for, but Tom's clientelle all probably know what kind of video card they use, most of the people visiting my site don't have a clue, so 1024 might be the average of a fairly plugged in crowd.

I know I could just centre it and make a small res. design that fits on bigger screens, but it seems kind of barren and corporate-ish. If I'm looking for a more graphics intensive artsie look, I guess I'm going to have to alienate some people.

Thanks for the IMOs.

I always check the resolution @ 800x600 and @1024x768 ..... 800x600 is the most widely used size of the visitors to my websites.

800x600 52.17%

1024x768 35.02%

640x480 4.32%

1280x1024 3.24%

this is from a site stats of 6000 pageviews. Most of my other sites have similar stats as far as percentages for screen resolution sizes.

Id say do it for 1024x768, It might be a little big for the 800x600, but they have scroll bars to handle that. If you make it smaller, there's nothing people with higher resolutions can do to make it looke bigger.

I think I'll aim for 1024 but include 800.

It's a pain when I'm trying to position background graphics for two different resolutions. Ho-hum, a fault of the medium I guess.

That title page is going to have to not be a surround - maybe clumps of rocks spread around would be more resolution friendly.

Thanks for the input, very useful.

I think theres a way to set image hieght/width depending on resolution using javascript. Sadly I can't remember how....

You could use javascript to direct people to physically different versions of the webpage too, don't remember how to do that either though.....

Thanks, but now it looks even better, even if my Mum is looking at it at home on her coal driven 486!

Thanks all, great advice.
