Add spacer image?

What exactly does this do when I add a spacer image in Dreamweaver?

Your question is a bit vauge but I can tell you what a spacer image is for.

A spacer image is a transparent image that does not show in the browser window, but is used to control spacing in autostretch tables. The spacer image maintains the width you set for each table and cell on the page. If you choose not to use spacer images in autostretch tables, columns will change size or even visually disappear completely if they do not contain content.

You can insert and remove spacer images in each column or let Dreamweaver add them automatically when creating an autostretch column. Columns that contain spacer images have a double bar along the top.

When you insert a spacer image in a column or set a column to autostretch, a dialog box appears that asks how you want to set up your spacer image file. If you have already set a spacer image for the site in the Dreamweaver preferences, the dialog box does not appear.

Hope this helps.

there is a better way to change tables to always have certain sizes without using an image though.
Code:
<table width="400">
  <tr>
    <td width="50">jack mama
    </td>
  </tr>
</table>
this represents a table which will be 400 pixels wide and a column which will always be 50 pixels wide, try to always set sizes in pixesls because percentages will give you a lot of problems.

to vertically stretch the table just add new lines
Code:
<tr>
  <td><br>
       <br>
            joe mama
       <br>
       <br>
  </tr>
</td>

The problem with set size tables though, depending on their use obviously is that people like me that run at high resolution end up with a LOT of wasted space.
Could you imagine the TIMO forums if they were run on a set width table?
I'd hate looking at the main forum screen or the threads screen if it was set at 800 width. Instead their set at 100% and takes advantage of a higher resolution
Both have their purposes

well for techimo i'd guess that for the column/row that says my name the width would be set in pixels then where my posted message is, it would be in percentage or just not specificed at all (default to fill the rest of the space)
and the table would be like 100% width or something.... i think that may be default.

I agree with Vas to a point, especially if you are building a business site.. if its just a personnal site, no biggie - but If you build a site you want customers to look at, you should accomodate all types of browsers/settings.. thats best done IMO, with Table using %, and typically.. I dont use 100%, I use 98% for the main table width.. transparant spacers are mandatory for good tables, IMO... such as in the example above:

<tr>
<td><br>
<br>
joe mama
<br>
<br>
</tr>
</td>

If you put a spacer and set the width to where you want it above and below "joe mama" you have better results in many instances.
