Shopping Cart soft

Hi guys & gals

I want to build a site that will incorporate a shopping cart.. either via a pre-built soft app or self-built via template, etc.

I've never done this before, and there are lots of choices. I'd prefer a free app (doubtful?) or a fully functional trial ver on which to learn. Or, a site with good instructions on how to build one.

The shopping cart site I will be building will be hosted on a fully customizable W2K - IIS5 webserver.

Thanks for your suggestions and thoughts.

p.s. I'll be using DWMX to for the site build.

There are a ton of things to consider when it comes to security with shopping carts. As far as building one yourself, I wouldn't reccomend it unless you already have a very good knowledge of how someone would attack the cart.

So many things need to be done to the data as far as stripping, verifying, etc. If it isn't done right, you really leave yourself wide open.

Which leads into my next point. That type of security really isn't free IMO. If you want a good secure cart, you will have to pay for it. You *can* use a free one, but it isn't worth the risk if this is a business investment.

Some web-hosting companies will give you a "free cart" with their package option, so you can get it free in that sense.

Personally I would buy one. If I was starting a business, and I needed an online cart, I would shell out the $$ just for piece of mind if not just security, and this comes from a guy who could program one of these. I don't even trust myself to build it tight as it needs to be.

Dunno just my confusing thoughts

Jkrohn

thekemp - thank you for your suggestion; Verisign does have a Shopping Cart / E-Commerce package, however it seems that I would need to pay to use their service; it's not a soft app that I can learn for free.

jkrohn - you make good points, and I agree with you on the self-building for actual use as I am new to this - self-building a secure e-commerce site is beyond my skill. That is why I am interested in something that is a soft app to perhaps purchase but I would need to give it a test drive. Thanks for your informative and well thought-out reply.

Right now, it's all about learning If anyone comes across or knows of an app that has a trial, I'm all eyes
