how can i change a small program with .exe extention to .com extention

means convert exe to com

I thought that is was as easy as going into a MSDOS prompt and renaming the file....

IE c:\>ren whatever.exe whatever.com

EXE and COM file structures are a lot different. EXE files have headers. I don't think COM files have headers.

Why would you want to? I cant think of any reason why one would be a benefit over the other.

There must be a reason for it if there's a utility. Way back when, in the XT era when harddrive space was at a premium, I used to convert COM to EXE, then run LZEXE to shrink them. It would save a few hundred KB which was quite a bit on a 10MB harddrive.


EDIT: 10MB not 10GB, doh!

LZexe was a great program, and cool for fooling debuggers, made your asm code look cool.
COM files are needed for some tasks such as user interfaces in dos, the COM stands for COMmand. You couldn't use .exe files in the SHELL= line in config.sys anyway.
