Yes. I'd say it's the best to start with. |

As a beginner, I would begin with A.

I learned/am still learning C++ first. Much easier than C in my opinion. It has become more used than C also. Java would be another good one - I can't write it, but i've heard it was slightly easier than C++.

Do you get discouraged easily?
Java/C++/C are NOT easy languages to learn.
If you just want to dink around they're not really suggested... maybe VBS, Perl, Ruby or something to learn the basics.
If you seriously want to just jump in hte middle of the ocean with a 100 lb mason brick tied to ya.. go with C++ You'll learn or you'll drown

At uni we were initially taught basic C, which I didn't mind, but that was followed by a horrible mix of C & C++. It really put me off the latter in a big way but its something I would like to go back & learn properly.
I work as a network admin so I usually end up coding dodgy scripts to automate tasks. As a result I tend to use Perl; it has a stack of modules available for easily adding functionailty, strong regexp support for text processing and the combination of being loosely typed & interpreted makes it ideal for the admin in a hurry. On the down side its really easy to write some horrible code (I should know) and some of the syntax is pure evil (OO functionality springs to mind).
At the moment I am playing around with Ruby just to get a feel for a language that was designed as OO from the ground up, seems quite nice so far. haskell & lisp are next on my list of things to take a closer look at.
However most the languages that have looked interesting to me are kind of off beat, so I suspect I really should take some time to atleast pick up the basics of C++ & Java, I just need to find some good books & some enthusiasm for them
Regards
eddy

CodeWArrior is great to program C++ and C+ apps with. It also supports Java RAD programming . |
