Can anybody tell me how to do this?:
I'm going on the road again, and I want to put a page in my website that only our team can access. My website is a public one, but the team I'm traveling with gets constant emails on changes and project scopes that I want to make it easy for them to access. What I want to do is this:
Set up a page that has all the spreadsheets and documents in downloadable format. (I already know how to do this)
Make that page password protected so only authorized persons can access it. (This is what i need help with....)
That page is only going to have a default username and password, so JoeBlow can't set up a user account....
Can I do this in FP2002? Will my host need different server extensions? Can someone help please. (ehmm. whir? lol )

Howdy!
Sounds like you need simple password protected directories. Here are a few tips I suggest:
1) Does your ISP have a control panel for your website? Many that do offer directory password protection options.
2) Ask your ISP to set up a password directory for you.
3) Are you fluent with scripts? (PHP OR PERL) If so, try www.hotscripts.com and look for USER AUTHENTICATION scripts.
4) Have a forum like TECHIMO? How about creating a private forum for the users of your choice?
I'm spoiled, as Choice #1 is what I have.
Good luck.

Head on over to: http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml and learn about .htaccess. It is very secure and very flexible. I have been working on one to put up on my site. First see if your ISP will allow this. As some ISP's don't allow anything to be password protected.
Or head on over: http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/cutindex6.shtml and find out about javascript. It really doesn't secure the page but, it hides it.
I used to have my web site hosted by my ISP and I used a javascript from: http://members.iinet.net.au/~biab/login/antibmk.htm . It is a very advanced and very good password protection for javascript. It is the best I have come accross.
Also, if somebody tries to access the page just by typing in the URL it will come up with a javascript alert and say please you login page. Then it takes you back to the main page. If you get the password wrong it does nothing.
Whereas to all of the other javascripts I have found just hides the page and if somebody finds out the page name they can do that. So I say go for that javascript from http://members.iinet.net.au/~biab/login/antibmk.htm or learn how to do .htaccess if possible.

To answer your question directly MrEd. Yes FP2002 will do password protection sites or sections of sites. If the server your website is on has Frontpage 2000 extentions or 2002 extentions on it then you will be able to do it. Then setup the username and password you want to use to allow access into that section. From within your Help menu of FP you should get the rest of the info you need http://www.ultrasw.com/frontpage.htm

Hey, embj...
I tried to go to http://members.iinet.net.au/~biab/login/antibmk.htm but after several tries just went to his index page at http://members.iinet.net.au/~biab/ and got this:
============================
Temporarily Closed
Due to an excesive amount of email, a virus, port scanning/hacking or other complication, many unanswered emails were irrecoverably lost. No tools have been located which can recover the damaged Office 2002 XP .pst file.
Of the 200 plus email load downloaded each day, 50% were viruses, 35% pure junkmail, 10% messages claiming I had sent a virus (untrue as some viruses are capable of forging an email header) and the remaining 5% were actual valid email messages.
Owing to a serious lack of time (and sometimes motivation) a new version of my web page and updates to what are now very old JavaScripts has not taken place for more than a year. Currently a new web page is in development but as already stated, I lack time to proceed with any speed.
My apologies for any inconvience although I feel not to blame for recent circumstances.
Lastly, I have a suspicion that some email sent to me may have been lost due to the overwhelming bulk of other email recieved. IINET gratiously allows 5meg for email storage but in any 24 hour period nearly 50meg of email may arrive. Checking my email account can lapse for three or four days which incurrs great strain on my account storage and I would not be surprized if some smaller emails failed to reach my computer due to email applications suffering large volumes of data.

============================
Is there somewhere else I can get this javascript?
Thanks!

Hmm, not that I have seen that there is any other page with that javascript on it. I e-mailed the person who updates the site. Maybe he or she will get it. Maybe not. I will find out. I requested that he or she send the javascript. If I get a response I will tell you what it says. |

Yep, it is very interesting. I can't use htaccess because I now use IIS. I like it better because it has a GUI instead of just the txt file that you have to go through and configure. It is a pain. I am lazy and couldn't stand editing that big file. |

Here is the e-mail that I received today in my e-mail about the program.
Hi There,
You've not specified which version of my login program you are referring to. I had versions 3, 4, 4.2, 5 and 6.2 available from my site http://www.iinet.net.au/~biab which are based on the principals of a demo version featured at http://javascript.internet.com. But it’s gone for now. Attached is version 4.2.1. My intention was not to have this script submitted and featured at this resource site. I required some feedback as to the login systems' feasibility and estimation of it's popularity. After the remarkable quantity of feedback received, I created version 3 which incorporated both bug fixes and requested functions. Other version followed with better usage instructions; to the limit of my documenting abilities.

I believe this is the one that I have that she or he sent me. I will look at it and find out. It can be downloaded from my site here in the downloads section. |
