setting up apache and php on windows xp

First of all, I'll admit I'm a complete newbie. I am quite good at programming in php, but I have never set up a web server (just used my hosted web sites as testing grounds). Now I want to set up certain php scripts to run on my own computer, for my own use only, and I need help setting it up...

I've downloaded and installed apache and php, but can't seem to get them to work at all. The help files may as well be in Greek as far as I am concerned. Although, I am a decent website designer and can write php, this whole issue of setting up a server seems to be completely beyond me!

Is there anyone reading this who knows exactly how to do this and could give me some instructions?

With Apache, all you have to do is edit the config file. After installing the software, just replace the ip address and the directory location with the one where you have your .html files stored (.jpegs etc.) and boom! You're set. as far as php scripting goes, I can not help there....if you have specific questions regarding apache though, just repost with greater detail in to what issues you are having and I will see how well I can guide you. I am running the latest version (2.0.44) on windows 2000 pro.
