PHP Date formatting question

If I have a date in PHP in the format:

2001-08-07 09:19

what is the easiest method to get it into a unix timestamp?

Thanks. I forgot to post the format that I want to convert to (I couldn't find it originally).

I want to convert from this format:

2001-08-07 09:19

to this format:

Thursday, 11/22/2001 - 18:12)

and I know that the times are different .
