Or an alternative would be to use IIS (Internet Information Server) which is already built-in w/ XP Pro. If you want to use that just go to the add and remove programs thing and go to the add/remove windows programs. Then check Internet Information Services. Then click install (or something like that at the bottom of the Window). You would need the Windows XP CD during the setup. Then to access it you would go into the control panel. Then to the Administration Panel and select IIS. Then you can just set it up easliy through the GUI. IIS will limit you to ten peeps being on your site at one time. It is real easy to setup a webserver using IIS. It is much easier to use than Apache because Apache uses that long text config file which can sometimes be confusing if you don't know what you are doing. If you don't use IIS then go with Apache. I now use IIS 6.0 that comes with .NET Server 2003. It is much easier to use than IIS 5.0 that comes with XP Pro. Also, IIS that comes with .NET Server 2003 comes with an FTP server built-in and has no limit to the number of peeps on your site at one time. Anyway I prefer IIS over Apacher because of the GUI. |

Or if you would prefer to use Apache download this version right here. Also, DNS is very complicated....if you want to run your own DNS servers use what the burning cat said. It would be easier to have somebody else do it for you. If you would like somebody else to host your DNS for FREE just go to http://www.zoneedit.com . That is what I use. It has never failed me, ever.

If you find Apache too complicated, I reccomend Xitami ( http://www.imatix.com) .. Xitami is the best performing windows-based web server, aside from Apache, I'd guess. Easy to use, too.

.NET Server 2003 is an OS. It hasn't been release to the public yet unless you are an M$ beta tester which I am. You cannot sign up to be a beta tester because the official launch of .NET Server 03 is in 28 days. I am now running the enterprise edition of .NET Server 03. I most likely going to buy .NET Server 03 Webserver Edition for my webserver. It is meant especially for running webservers hence the name Webserver Edition. Yeah, it will cost me $299 to upgrade to that though. So I might keep the beta version til about September or something like that. The beta is valid for a whole year. You would just use IIS 5.0 in XP Pro. |
