FTP problem

hey,
today, i started getting a "! Connection Failed ftp.sitethati'mconnectingto.com - connection refused" message whenever i try to connect to any FTP site through any FTP program. it's not my firewall, the permissions are set correctly and i even tried shutting it down. the FTP information for all those sites is correct. this just started happening today. maybe a port is closed somehow? any ideas?

yeah it sounds like a port is closed to me as well.

first, what type of internet connection do you have (and through who)?

have you tried connecting to an ftp site through another computer (if your on a network)?

not on a network. cable connection through road runner. the FTP sites worked earlier today is what's weird. i was trying different adware removing programs today, including spybot and spy sweeper. maybe one of them closed a port? how would i open it?

hmm...interesting.
adware wouldn't close a port...the only way i'm aware of to close a port is with a firewall (that's what a firewall is in essence).

to check and see what ports you have open and closed you'll need to do a port scan

I would say it had something to do with your host, maybe they were doing maintenance or something?

yea, it could have been your isp blocking the port. glad to hear it works now.
