VERY cool site

Has anyone seen www.rentacoder.com before?

I found it two nights ago. Basicly people who need coding done, bugfixes, things designed (graphics, webpages, etc) post there. Then people bid on the job. The "buyer" accepts a bid, money is escrowed, and waits till you turn in your "work".

I have made $85 in two days, during which my work has totaled about 3 hours.

For those that like programming or designing as a hobby, and are looking to make a little money if possible, check it out.

ya I looked into it quite awhile back..
My biggest problem is I have ZERO clue how much my work is worth

Not to mention being able to compete
I don't want to bid really cheap just to get my ratings up (they kinda don't appreciate that around there!)

sounds like you found a job!

I asked them(rentacoder) 3 questions:

how does it work for coders?
how does it work for buyers?
how does it work for them?

they nailed the first 2, never answered me on the 3rd. guess, work like ebay?

Jkrohn,

how do we see the jobs you did and the buyers feedback?

if you want to actually learn something about programming, check out:

www.topcoder.com

not for everybody(including me), but learn code quick.

We handle all the money collecting so you can concentrate on what you're best at...coding. By the time you've begun work, the buyer's money has already been placed into an escrow account, freeing you from the problem of getting 'stiffed'. To pay for this service, Rent a Coder charges coders a 15% Rent a Coder Fee on the profit from work and questions. So if you don't find work...we don't get paid. (Note: The Rent a Coder Fee is reduced for one-on-one auctions and bonus/immediate payments...see the Rent a Coder Fee schedule for discount details)

so looks like they take 15% off the top..

so to get $85, you need to make $100???

what do they charge the buyers? 15% also?

what about liability? who pays for that? what's the contract?

hey, rentacoder may be great for some, but are they really providing something worth 15%? off top from both sides?

Umm I'm thinking 15% from both sides would equal 30% fee.. so I don't think they charge both.

The developer when assessing the fee to charge should keep in mind the fee.

If I am correct, and I hope I am as I have my first job posting currently on the site, the 15% is taken from the bid agreed upon. So in actuality the coder should just add 15% to his bid to cover the RentaCoder costs.
I dont mind paying the 15% as a buyer. It works for the larger value bids as it guarantees a place where 1)coders gather for business 2) there is security in the deal 3) a neutral judge will arbitrate any disagreements involving cash 4) neither party can be completely ripped off like on other sites.

As far as the smaller $100 dollar deals, I woulod still think it would be worthwhile paying $15 before a deal for the opportunity to be able to see the ratings history of the person you accept.

But then again, that's all from the buyers view.
