promoting my site

hi all. ive been thinking about how to promote my website and i think i want to join a banner exchange program. but there are sooo many. what is a good one to join? i dont want any porn banners but other than that whatever is fine. i also want my site to be listed on search engines like google. how might i go about doing that? thanks!!
