more than likely learning VB would be your best beginning language, since it is BASIC... if you want to start out with OOP (object oriented programming) i would suggest Java since its is somewhat similar to c++, but not as powerful in all aspects. C++ is your final stop, as it is a much more complex language

| VB is so much easier than c++ and when you get into the advanced stuff with it the apps are comparable with c++ although your program might be a little bit more of a resource hog

Thanks again | For Visual Basic you'll need to purchase a copy of the VB IDE.
I personally have Visual Basic 6 installed. |

I would actually advocate C first. The reason is it is a procedural language. It is straight forward and helps train you in logic flow. Then move onto C++ or VB.

I would learn C or C++ or Java first. Pure programming fundamentals would be easier to grasp with one of those languages, IMO. You need to start out simple, with programs that run at the command prompt.
If you start with VB, it will be too easy to concentrate on only doing "cool" things at the beginning. You don't want to do "cool" things until you have a solid understand of programming in general.
When you are ready to move to creatings windows applications, that's when you want to start considering Visual Basic (or C#). You need to purchase VB for VB6. For VB.Net or C#, you can download a compiler for free from Microsoft if you don't want to purchase the IDE. |

One thing to note, C and C++ and Java are much more cross platform compatible, as opposed to VB which isn't.
Personally, I'm trying to learn C++ now. After careful review of the options, VB is an overloaded field, and c and c++ aren't. Java doesn't run as fast as c or c++ so, in the end I had to choose between c or c++. The pro's are divided on which to learn, so I went with c++ as it is more object oriented.
BTW..... Linux has everything I need to play with ruby, c, c++, python, perl, php, and more..... all FREE (sorry guys, had to plug the penguin !!! ) |
