Citing continued technical issues with attempting to deploy Windows Vista, General Motors is considering a future migration to the next-generation Windows 7 platform instead.
Vista taxes all but the most modern PCs with hefty processing and memory requirements. Many of GM's PCs can't even run the system. "By the time we'd replace them, Windows 7 might be ready anyway," Killeen says. Then there are compatibility problems with all the software that needs to run on Windows. GM's software vendors still haven't ensured all their programs will run on Vista trouble-free. So the company is sticking with Windows XP for now. Killeen figures GM could install Windows 7 in three or four years.

| Pretty much goes for all regulated industries (pharm, securities, chemical, energy). Who would waste money to validate software in a Vista environment when "7" is right around the corner? |

| Too bad companies don't realize that all MS is doing is trying to get them to not migrate away from Windows. All this talk of Windows 7 is exactly that. There's no way an version of Windows that's "just around the corner" is going to fix all the major issues that have been reported about Vista. Besides I'm still waiting for them to deliver on all their promises from the 1990s. |

| Vista was delayed, and still had a ton of problems.
Windows 7 won't be different.
If anything, it would be a major service pack to Vista. |
