yellowTAB, a small German development firm, claims the first official release version of the Zeta operating system is drawing close - possibly as early as May or June. Zeta builds upon the BeOS platform, which was immensely popular among enthusiasts before Be Inc. closed shop. Retail pricing for the "Deluxe Edition" will be around $100 plus tax.
yellowTAB bundles many applications with Zeta, including an office suite called Gobe Productive that includes word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation applications; the Firefox Web browser; an instant messaging client for AIM (clients for MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and Jabber are available separately); a CD burner and DVD player; numerous games; a PDF viewer and writer (you can create PDF files from any Zeta application that can print); a scanning front end; several emulators (BeBochs, DosBox, BeUAE, and others); and development tools. Zeta also benefits from the fact that most of the third-party BeOS applications found on Bebits.com can run on it as-is.
yellowTAB plans to demonstrate Zeta 1.0 this weekend during the Open Source Conference 2005 in Japan. The operating system will be used in conjunction with systems provided by Tokyo FXF.
yellowTAB and Tokyo FXF, a desktop and laptop manufacturer based in Japan, will co-exhibit at the Zeta Zone booth in OSC2005, where Zeta 1.0 will be displayed alongside Tokyo FXF's Zeta-based desktop and laptop computer products. Additionally, yellowTAB CEO Bernd Korz is also scheduled to demo Zeta 1.0 on Saturday March 26 from 1:00PM.
