PC-BSD is a step in the right direction for an open source desktop operating system, especially with its PBI application installer. Installing PBI-based apps is about as simple as installing most common Windows apps.
System installation was simple enough. Hardware setup was about non-existent, as it took care of most aspects, even including X.org graphics server selection and configuration.
The memory footprint is manageable, and the system is responsive. The above screenshot is from a PC-BSD install running on a low-end SFF box: Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB DDR memory, Radeon 9600 Pro, etc.
