he was probably thirsty. 
Nice pic, we have one of a kookaburra on our back fence, and a possum in the palms, somewhere. Dog tend to go nuts and drive them away, though.

cool bird! and you did so well with the camera, considering the time limit! hand feeding birds is quite and experience too, if you ever get the chance..although i imagine it would be a bit difficult with a bird like that
