Second year of the lonely motorcycle event. The goal is make it to Hope B.C. from the Okanagan Valley B.C. Hwy 97c to Merritt BC and then on to the Coquihalla Highway (hwy 5), through the mountains and drop into Hope.
I made it as far as the old toll booth stop on the Coquihalla. (elevation 4068 feet/1240 m) There I had to make an executive decision. Up ahead, a mile or so down the road I could see a snow storm crossing my path at the Great Bear Snowshed. On Hwy 97c and the Pennask Pass, (1728 m)I already dealt with blowing snow, bashing through a couple of snow drifts on the road and high winds. The wind chill factor felt like -30c at 130kph. I wasn't about to risk going through a snow storm with very few places to turn around. Back to the Okanagan I went.
Last year I made the trip on April 13 all the way to Hope. I guess the end of March is pushing it a bit.

I just about turned around when I was going up to the Pennask Pass which is about 1300' higher up than "toll booth". High winds, drifting snow on the highway and near white out conditions at spots had me thinking. I decided to push on.
Memories of riding Edmonton year round in blizzards, snowy/icy roads, waking up to -50 and having to push my bike into the underground parking of the building across the street to warm it up enough to get it started, (push start in second gear down ramps) every morning to get to work made me think, this isn't all that bad. Keep going......
I'm no longer 21 years old but I still have the same tenacity of will power.
I also have reasonably good sense since I decided not to ride through the snow storm just up ahead.
Monday, if not working I'm heading out to try again for Hope. I'll still beat last year’s date of April 13, just not beating it by doing so in March. There's always next year.
No not "CRAZY". I just like a challenge every now and then.
