It was a rental when I went to Munich for a week. Such a car wont fit my budget by far  . This model was at the time around $40.000

No, he means $40.000. Just because we in the USA use commas, doesn't mean that periods can't be used just as effectively.
All you needed when you passed the Porsche was your grandmother in the rear in a rear facing seat knitting. She could wave to the Porsche as you went by. My brother said that's what REALLY REALLY bothered him on the Autobahn when he was going over 100 mph and a Mercedes TC passed him like he was standing still and grandma in the back waved to him!!!

Its we Dutch say it the other way around like 40.000,-
Maybe that will change with the €??
But you get the idea..
