Just got a new digital camera for Christmas. Here's a shot of Mt. Rainer straight off the deck of my parents' house. This is with about 8x zoom and no tripod. I was quite pleased with the results.

If your shutter speed is high enough you don't need a tripod, even at 8x. If there is enough light and your shutter speed can be quite high which can stop high speed motion, such as a ball in air, so it is not surprising that you got a clear shot even with out the tripod.
I love the picture, I wish I had something like that nearby for me to shot.
You must be pretty far off if you were shooting at 8X. Looks close. How far away where you really? I'm gonna guess about 30 miles.

Honestly about 45-50 miles away (takes about an hour and 10 minutes to get to Rainer from our place)
